Silly minor errors or ....

...just silly people. The search for minor DD's continue. The listings keep mounting. The "discovery pieces" continue to be attributed and graded. Of course an old, great in his own mind pool player poo pa's any of them. Another, an "expert" in the field is only interested if he can clear major $ figures off of a coin and certainly could never be bothered with such a I can't line mine pocket with this garbage question.

So I am so glad that I have finally been able to "meet" and trade with two of the most prolific submitters on the discovery/listing sites. Looks like each of our collections are getting a bit more filled.

The reason for this I guess is to let newbies know to keep looking and the "silly minor errors" are still out there and are being made every year. All you have to do is keep looking. Don't get discouraged if you are given a snide remark for asking. How else does one learn? If a member does not want to give a serious answer or they are tired of the same old questions, then wouldn't it be best if they just moved along and not even read the thread to begin with.

Thanks for the boost to the general collector. I find that it is impossible to make a coin for circulation that is perfect to design. Every process has inherent variables. Some process variables are true mint errors and become very valuable. But, the majority of variations are just that - variations. I find it interesting to spot these variations in my coins. I keep them all. Some I share on CT. But, they are all mine and I found them. And, I had fun doing it. Call them crazy coins and put them in your crazy coin box.

I am glad that the both of you have found an area you enjoy and find satisfaction in your coins. I do not feel that the pool players, or entrepreneurs would wish you ill will , I certainly do not.
But, I really feel you are in the minority of the "silly minor error seekers", as the majority of those I tend to see are hoping beyond hope, theirs is somehow a 'major error' or at least a new one never seen before one of a kind, and the second thing they ask is usually "How much is it worth??" You seem to realize there are major mint errors/varieties and minor mint errors/varieties, and " damaged or non-mint errors/varieties". It is the latter group that sends some members into distress as little thought is sometimes given to the person who answers' time or the amount of learning they had to have done to even be able to answer. When new posters are referred to a webpage or source, the questioner is sometimes questioning why? ,without any reason except if they accept that comment they would have to admit they have nothing of value. If they were like you two and accepted it for what it was, every one would be much happier.

A couple of days ago someone dumped a whole collection, probably from ebay , and asked someone to check them out and tell if they had anything, Why should they be willing to learn themselves if nothing was of value!
Machine doubling is variation, of no monetary value as not truly a mint error/variety, but if people want to collect them realizing such, they are a content and happy person. The same for damage that is unique. The difference is in the expectations. Happy findings.

Jim, it's not my fault that @Heater is too chicken-hearted to name names. If he wants to collect the garbage, let him go ahead. I just make it a point to let the newcomers to the hobby know that minor varieties will only embarrass the heirs when they try to sell them as valuable collectibles.

I see some new points here. I, personally, am not interested in making money off my coins. Although, if I found an extremely valuable one, I could look at it in a different light. I do like to understand what I have. Now, I do see the point about the 'heir' that thinks grandpa left a rare coin. This could be embarrassing if due diligence is not exercised. If my heir picks up a coin that I marked with "cud", "ghost", "die chip", whatever it could cause unnecessary posting and conversations. I try to let my children know that I am just having fun and if something was very rare and valuable I would have let them know in one way or another.
