I've recently purchased this 1894 P Morgan Dollar locally. I was wondering if people think it is in good enough condition to get it graded? I also purchased a 1893 P Morgan Dollar but I don't believe it is in good enough condition to be worth grading. If you have an opinion on the value that would also be appreciated. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Have you had the 1894 authenticated? https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/1758/Counterfeit-Detection-1894-Morgan-Dollar/ I'm no expert but it looks questionable.
Yes, those look suspicious. Have you weighed them and checked them with a magnet? Welcome to CoinTalk! I wish we could offer you better news...
If the 1894 dollar was genuine, it would be worth the certification fees, but sadly it is not. The lettering and the numbers in the date do not have the correct shapes. Unfortunately if you are not good at spotting counterfeits, you need to buy certified coins or have a good relationship with an expert dealer. Sadly the Chinese have counterfeited all of the Morgan Dollars and have even added a few, like the 1904-CC, which never existed until now. The Carson City Mint closed in 1893. Counterfeit 1904-CC dollar:
Coincidentally, if you're interested, The Numismatist (February issue, p. 97) has an article about counterfeit 1893 Morgans (but CC, not P). They always have a regular section called "Counterfeit Detection" that's often interesting.
Thank you all for the help. I thought the date looked good myself. I will get in touch with the auction house that sold them to me and see if there is anything that they can do. I appreciate everyone's help.
After right clicking on the photos and opening them in a new tab, then enlarging them. I observe you have two counterfeits. You could send them to ICG for encapsulating in their "For Educational Purposes" holder. I recommend everyone go to VamWorld.com and study the die characteristics of any Morgan or Peace Dollar before you buy the coin. Continue being a coin collector but buy the book before you buy the coin. I have a counterfeit Peace that is 20% silver and a Morgan that is 94% silver. Enjoy coin collecting but read reference books first.
