    This is a Photo of the best Morgan I've ever seen...it's a 1878 8TF VAM4.

    What would ya'll grade it?

    Thanks,
    Speedy

Sorry if the photo is small...I could maybe upload a bigger one later.

Hi Speedy, the picture size is fine IMO, it looks just a little blurry to me (could be my eyes, I'm not getting any younger! :p ) Did you use a tripod or copy stand? I was amazed at how much my picture quality went up when I started using a tripod and the auto timer on my camera. Anyways, back to the grade, hard to tell if it is the blur, or if there is actual wear on the hair above the ear. I assume it is the blur, since this is the best Morgan you have seen. Judging by the pic with no view of the reverse, I'll say MS 63, chance of a 64? Nice coin no matter what!

No way to grade a coin with only one view !

This one I had a Tripod..I need to try it by hand and not the tripod...It's a little blurry but I can't get another one since it's in the mail to ANACS!!!!

I couldn't see a bit of wear on the coin...but I may have missed it.

The high spot (Cheek) has spots but no digs or nicks....I'm shocked at how good it is.

I'll try to post the back...its a little better than the Ovb

When it comes back I'll try to post the grade.

Question: The denticle centered under the 18, is it the picture or is there a ding there?

I would say it's a dig but I'm not sure..

Have you already sent it out for grading? If not, I really would prefer to see the reverse before attempting a grade - especially since we're looking at a higher-grade MS coin.

Is the darker area to the left (and slightly below) the arrows due to the lighting or is it the coloration of the coin?

It's the light...the coin is blast white.

Hi. Can't tell too much from the photos, but the reverse field below STATES and above IN GOD WE TRUST shows what could be circulation marks. Don't be too disappointed if it comes back AU58 or so.

Okay. Here is my opinion, then. The coin has a slightly mushy strike on the obverse with the small rim hit but a clean cheek. The reverse has a very nice, strong strike with no flaws that I could see. I could see this coin coming back MS64. The strike in the hairlines may bring it down a little from that to MS63, but I think it would be a shame for it to come back that low with the cheek being as clear as it is. Guess we'll just have to wait and see. :)

Also looks like it has a dandy obverse die crack from the 3rd star on the left up through E PLUR. Cool!

Well, whatever it grades, that's a nice coin! You'll have to let us know what it gets. I'd say MS-62 just to be different.

I'm gonna stick my neck out like I usually do so as to let me get my head chopped off and handed to me, but my first impression from the photo was MS-64 (too many bag marks for a -65 IMNSHO). However, since I tend to overgrade from a photo most of the time (there's usually flaws that are not visible in a photo), I usually take off one or two points from my guess making it an MS-62/63. Still, I've been pleasantly surprised before. Regardless, it's a nice coin.

Speedy, please post the grade on this thread when it gets back from ANACS (did you request the five-day service?).

I think the rim dings are gonna do ya in on that one kiddo - there's actually 4 of them. The crystal ball says ANACS will send that one back MS63. A shame too - because without the rim dings - that puppy is a 65 :(

Thats not circulation marks more like brakes in the luster--In person I don't see how it would come back AU---

The clean cheek is what got me...I've seen tons on Morgans but none to the best of my knowledge have been this good looking

That's a VAM-4--I had a friend help me on that.

I thought you would like that ;) ;)

I will and no--they said it will be about 90 days

Well it was bought as a MS-60 so a 63 it better then 60 ;)
