OK, so a couple years ago I began thinking it would be fun to start collecting currency along with coins (I had been collecting coins since I was 12 or so). I had no knowledge of the hobby...only that I wanted to learn about it. Right when I began thinking about it, I began searching my change for star notes. I didn't find any for quite some time...but I did find a $1 FRN that stuck out to me and I had to keep it. I doubt it has any actual value (other than $1), but it was the first note that I plucked from circulation...so I will never let it go. Recently I began scanning my collection and I got around to that note today. I thought I would share it as this boring little note sparked my interest in the hobby. I liked this note because of the serial number. As you can see, the first 4 digits repeat 5s...then it was 2001. I really liked the repeating 5s so I grabbed it. So, here it is. It's a Series 2003A Chicago $1 FRN serial: G55552001F
I like it! Something has to get us going and that one did it for you. I was selling what I found at first on ebay. Lot's of 1950 series' twenties. Then the collector bug kicked in. Don't sell much now
It's a shame about the damage on the bottom of the note, otherwise that looks like it would be a solid AU (scans are hard to tell). My question to others, does that damage knock it down to a mere XF, or does it knock it down lower? Eitherway, it's a nice start to a collection. When I got started, my collection consisted of what I liked found from circulation. Today, I'm pretty much back to that same philosophy (can't lose much money that way) and I'm all the happier for it. Everyweek is a new surprise and it's the "investigation" into what you've found that helps to drive the acquisition of knowledge to go with it. Enjoy.
i dont really see it as damage, it shows to me as more like a small fold. Does the paper tear at that spot, or is it just 'bent' in one direction?
To me it looks like a small bend or fold in the edge. As long as the paper is not torn it should go to a high XF or low AU...High XF notes can have 2 to 3 minor folds. Since this one just has 1 minor it could go AU! RickieB
