    what are the options:
    (a) circulation damage/die chip (it's on the edge of a small letter) and/or it took a hit or two in that area over the past 38 years.

    (b) let's say an S over D .. how would that have to happen?
    Think about it?
so ... a production Denver Hammer Die would have to be sent to San Francisco right?
and they would have to (manually) try to stamp over the D. But awkwardly stamp to the top side of it.
then SanFran would have to use it to mint a bunch of dimes .. like a quarter million of them or much more. With that probability you should be able to google it and find a bunch of hits of other ppl having them.

Now, let's add that Mint Marks were hand punched *until* 1989.
This dime is a 1991, so that's 2 years after they automated it ....
so now .. how can that happen ??????

    or maybe it's just (a) ??

Double Die I know just enough to be dangerous

Dimes are notorious for die chips from the 80's on. In fact, only finding one chip on a dime is almost a rarity in itself. From your pics, it looks like a chip to me.

Can’t imagine two parallel very closely spaced die chips. Also certainly PMD.

    oh yeah.
    it's just damage then.
... just trying to make you think more rather than revert to mint error because you haven't seen it before. Damage is unlimited ... so that's a lot that you haven't seen before.
