Found this coin yesterday whilst metal detecting. have identified it as a Galley Halfpenny, but am having trouble getting an idea of valuation - can anyone help, please? Many thanks.

Howdy Phunkpig - Welcome to the Forum !!

Can you possibly get better pictures ? These make it quite hard to identify let alone evaluate the coin.

I am moving your post to where it will likely get a better response.

thanks for that - was not sure where to start! Unfortunately, my camera isn't up to much, so these are the best photos I can get...

That is a solidino of Venice, from the mid to late middle ages.

Well, that is what it looks like. But based on those pictures Charles do you feel confident that it is genuine ? Can you even begin to attribute the coin ?

I certainly can't on either score.

Are you suggesting the coin may be a couterfeit? Does this mean it may be rare?

No, I am saying that we can't tell either way based on the first set of pics.

Yes they do, those are much better :thumb:

I usually do not like to comment too much until I at least can get a good look at a coin - I don't like to get people's hopes up and then dash them to the ground later.

Anyway, I do agree with Charles as to it being a soldino. It was issued under the Doge Leonardo Lauredan 1501-1521. The legends read obv - LE LAV DVX S M V (Leonardo Lauredan, Doge. St Mark of Venice) - rev - LAVS TIBI SOLI (Thee Alone be Praised).

If it is genuine it should weigh approx 0.25gm and be about 12mm across. The weight might a touch light because it appears the coin was clipped. Check on these if you can.

    Value would be around $50 - $75.

can someone link to another example of this coin with the legends in that order (TIBI split at bottom)? Just wondering if there is another example to compare to as I cant find one.
