Lets suppose you have an old mint bag of saved coins. If these coins slide around can that create a cleaned / wiped appearance?
Coins rubbing together is friction against one another, cleaning no not there my be rubs and straches, bag marks...which will effect their surfaces. But no that isn't cleaning,
The GSA sale of silver dollars had many examples of baggy coins. That's why many of them got graded as MS-62 and -61.
Bag marks can still be mint state while improperly cleaned is details. I don't want bag marks, but they are much more desirable than a noticeably cleaned coin.
Remember Morgans came in $1000.00 bags so they are going dinging each other every time that bag was moved.
Thanks, that's what I figured. I'd pulled a bunch of 1938 Washingtons out of the bag. They looked really good, although mixed in with essentially junk silver. Submitted 12, all came back Gennied Cleaned UNC Details...I had concerns for QC, but not for cleaning. Then again, they were really outta place in that bag. Time to see my eye Dr.
While they may be details, there is a market for old toned Washingtons. If you are an Ebay seller you might be able to sell them as is. (Out of the holder). And do OK. Although submitting 12 of these coins is expensive and even if some of them came back straight graded I think you are hurting your profit margin, unless you want the straight grade for a personal collection.
