I love how he admits to it not being an error, but still tries to claim that the upside-down variety is significantly rarer than the right-side up variety. He may not even be lying lol... perhaps he actually believes it to be true...
Wow, I just went through a roll of Monroe dollars and I had an exactly even split between right side up and and upside down. As I understand it, it is an entirely random process. Cheers, David
For business strikes, yep it is totally random what the orientation is, and in the long run the overall average will be 50% either way. The radial alignment of the letters is entirely random too. Proofs use a lettered collar and all should have the same orientation; if a proof president dollar has upside-down lettering, that is an error (and probably an extremely rare onw).
I should sell an "error roll" of Prez dollars - you know - a roll with an obverse or reverse showing at both ends. Those are infinitely more rare than rolls with both an obverse and reverse showing. Who knows what you will find in this unsearched roll. Why, there may be more coins that are facing the wrong way! Or you may be one of the lucky few who find the incredibly rare dollar where the edge lettering faces the right way but the coin was struck backwards! The Mint has not released figures on how many of these unbelievable error coins and error rolls exist but I believe I have the only known examples. So HURRY, HURRY, HURRY! Don't think - just send me your money. NOW! Before these amazing errors are all gone. Did I mention that I inherited these rolls from my uncle who died in 1950 (never mind these coins had not been minted when he died or that I had not been born yet) and that I don't know anything about coins and that, even though I think there are thousands of dollars worth of errors in my rolls, I am willing to let them go for only a few hundred times face value? Oh yeah - there is a 50% restocking fee and no return on opened rolls. Did I leave anything out?
There are worse auctions on ebay than this one. He doesn't even go too far with saying its rare. Sure, he's dead wrong about the rarity and only an idiot would bid on it. But he does appear to be within ebay guidelines... (not saying much. HA!)
