I have no clue on the type if error it looks like an s mint mark at the top after the n..im curious on possible value and grade thoughts and any info would be appreaciated
Welcome to CoinTalk @Curious Coin ! When it comes to errors, rely on Paddyman98's opinions. If you look up 'die chip' you will see what you have here. A coin with a die chip can still be interesting to collect even if the die chip does not add monetary value to your coin.
Since it's touching the rim, I believe it would be called a cud. But First and Foremost, I bow to paddyman's greater knowledge.
Yes, and because of that gouge, it would be considered damaged. It's value would be diminished accordingly. Chris
Not in this case. It looks more like a die crack. Worth about two cents with that hit that Abe's head took.
I was thinking the same thing, too, @Hookman. When I looked again at this coin i see only one end of the "blob/glob" is partially on top of the rim and extending into the field. I thought that this was the reason he designated it a die chip rather than a cud. I do wish @paddyman98 would explain it to us. Thank you also @cpm9ball for your explanation, too.
The image is kind of blurry. Even more when it is enlarged. Could be many things.. The play of light at an angle, crud, a die chip with crud, damage.. etc.
It's just a 'hit' or contract mark. It's not a cud, retained cud, die chip, -- Could be the left-end result of the damage to Lincoln's head - it continues in the same direction to the N. But even if it's not related, it's not an error, imo
Just to be clear.. Fred remarked on the mark on Lincoln's Head.. I was talking about the area in question around the letter N in IN
This is what I understood from what @Fred Weinberg wrote: That it is possible that whatever caused the damage/gouge mark on Lincoln's head was north-west sweeping and that it might have collected the material we see missing from the head gouge, depositing it next to (and around?) the "N" Am I misunderstanding what Mr. Weinberg meant? If I am understanding, I do not see any discrepancy between what you, @paddyman98 and Mr. Weinberg are saying. Thanks for the clarification.
I also think Fred was saying that the gouge on the head AND the mark at N could be related. However, I have neither the knowledge nor the experience to argue anything with either Fred or paddyman. I bow to the wisdom of both !!
