I always thought these were pretty cool. I love the design. What other coins did we make with USA on them to use somewhere else? Feel free to post anything like this.
the Philippines are the only ones i have with USA on them, here's the one centavo.. this one doesn't have USA, but instead a U.S. General..minted in San Francisco..
I found it interesting that the Philadelphia mint produced coins for other governments , I had not seen ones that said UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on them . Thanks , my interest in these coins is piqued now & I'll have to look into it and maybe acquire an example .
I have a set of the Philippines coins, the one 1908 - S Peso I have is silver 80/20 copper. I like showing the reverse with the United States of America showing with the date and asking, "What denomination do you think this coin is?" No one has guessed it is a Peso yet.
Just a bit of History. The Philippians were a US Territory from the time we acquired it in 1899 from Spain as a result of the Spanish American War and to after WW II when we gave them their independence. So it is no surprise the we minted their coins during this period.
I am quite sure that these Douglas MacArthur coins were struck at the San Francisco Mint. As the prvious poster said, the Philippines was a U.S. territory until 1945. That agreement had been made before World War II began, and we kept our word.
I am curious to see if the US mints(s) struck coinage bearing "USA" on them for use in any other countries/territories/possesions besides the Philippines. Off the bat I can only think of the Philippines. Any others?
I may be wrong, but I believe that U.S. mints minted coins for several other countries, including the Philippines and Panama, but that the Philippines are the only ones with the U.S. on them. [ In the past the United States has struck coins for Argentina, Australia, Bahamas, Belgian Congo, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Curacao, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Fiji, France, French Indo-China, Greenland, Guatemala, Hawaii, Honduras, Israel, Liberia, Mexico, Nepal, Netherlands, Netherlands East Indies, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Philippines, Poland, El Salvador, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Surinam, Syria, Taiwan, Thailand and Venezuela. ] from this link . >>Will-Us-Mint-Once-Again-Produce-Coins-For-Other-Countries
Here is the PCGS set registry that contains a list of coins the USA minted for other countries https://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/mu...tured-by-mints-united-states/composition/4824 I'm not a set person when it comes to collecting, but I actually do think this is one of the cooler ideas for a set
Please don't forget the beautiful TRADE Dollar that was minted in the U.S. in Philadelphia , Carson City, and San Francisco mints to be used only in Asia 1873-1885. This 1876-S example I bought in 1990 at a coin show has "Chop Marks" proving with-in Asian community that this coin is "good" and not a counterfeit even though MANY counterfeits exist today so beware of fakes when Buying.
True it was intended for that, but it was also a US coin and was legal tender for use in commerce here from 1873 to mid 1876 (and again after 1965). The Philippines coins are the only ones that have United States of America on them unless you want to include the Saudi Arabian 1 and 4 pound (denomination not weight) gold disks we produced in 1945.
