Have several 40's decade dimes, and saw mention of the 42/41. This is a D, and where I can't say I can see remnants of the one, I can see the 4 over 4. Opinions, other than maybe get my eyes checked?
I see what you see. Normally abnormalities suth as these are chalked up as damage. Personally i think its cool and i would keep. Keep searchin there out there. Welcom to the forum!!!
That's what I read too. Seen the photos, and place heartbreak here lol. Another paragraph on, another indication according to the webpage, was the overlaying 4. Idk, selling its not what I want to do. I've recently starting being interested in coins. I'm surprised by how fascinated I am by them. Hours on hours I've spent looking tv through every coin I can snag or buy from friend's amd what I can find. Anyways, I'm hoping it was for the find. Now I'm looking at a plane Jane looking 1969D penny that's stapled into a cardboard square with window. 1969D BU Uncirculated is what the type days. Looks brand new, bright copper reddish. Was curious cuz It's not a 7400$ penny. But it'd be cool if it was lol
Many many years ago I bought a roll of 1942 mercuries. I had dreams of finding a 42/41 but never did. I have to admit that the thrill of the search was worth the cost of the roll many times over.
Agreed - I buy bags of Mercs in bulk to add to my silver stack - I always separate the 1942 & 1942D for further scrutiny - although I've seen a few 'maybe 42/1' dimes, after close inspection, there were none - I'm sure all the major online bullion dealers have staff who search for the key dates and varieties before dumping the coins into bulk bags.
He said it was a D, and on the 42/1 D the 2/1 is NOT obvious or prominent. Unfortunately the doubled 4 on it IS obvious, and this isn't it.
"the “D” mintmark will have been repunched, that is stamped over a “D” that was placed in the wrong position."
I've yet to see anything claiming that the 42/1 D was/is easy to detect. I've looked at it for some time with something like a jewlers loupe, and when I took the pictures, it's with my old phone that's falling apart but since it still works for the most part, I refuse to buy another one. The camera on this this is far from the best, and for the subpar pictures I apologize. I know I can be trying to convince myself of what I see, may have, but I still see blobs on the 2, and a ghost of a 4 next to it. Not in the exact position as 2 pictures I've been able to find that supposedly are real, so I've shot a bunch more, amd marked where and what I'm seeing. I.also marked what seems to be a shadowed 1, the 19 side. I haven't seen mention, but wonder what im seeing all the same.
Yes I was thinking about the 42/1 P. Thanks for pointing that out. When I looked up the 42/1 D it says the mm is repunched. https://coinsite.com/the-1942-over-1941-mercury-dime/ I don't see the doubling on your 4 which seems to be a stronger marker than the 2 over 1.
I found a 42/41D about 10 years ago in a roll of mercs I had from my grandgathers collection. The D version is definately not as obvious as the phiy is and is most noticeable on the 4 but that is a tough one. Looks a little weak to me. I dont recall what other die markers there are but you should def have them on hand too line up also when checking for this one. Good luck!!!
Im wondering, I dont personally know more than 1 person who collects, and he doesn't have any 42 mercs. Would it be sufficient to pull pics offline? Or is the possibility of lookig at fakes too high?
