One of the first 12 Caesars, Claudius is the first I could acquire this year. This coin from Antioch has always been on my wish list for many years. I would like to share it among my coin-friends. It weighs 14.53 g.
Frankly and modestly, do you advise me to soak it in pure distilled water or shall I keep it as it is ? Maybe it needs cleaning. Personally I prefer it natural and popular like that for ever. But what do I know?
It looks big and chunky. What's its diameter? Also it looks like the obverse has rounded edges and the reverse has more sharp edges?
@ J.L Diameter is 28 mm. You're right about the edges. Anyway, concerning the edges, what is sure at hand is that they are almost covered with reddish sand. Hope I'm clear. Now .. Any approximate value for this coin?
Here are a few of mine, 2 middle denominations and 1 smaller. Yours seems to be a large denomination at 28mm and 14.53g. Is there a ER hiding at the end of your obverse legend? And since you bring up the 12 Caesars, this is what I've got so far for them from Antioch: (For those in the know, correct me if I'm wrong... There are no Antioch issues for Julius Caesar nor Vitelius, Caligula issued very little, and Galba is still pretty rare?)
Nice provincial issue of a popular emperor! Here's my most recent Claudius provincial: Claudius, AD 41-54 and Agrippina II, AD 50-59. Roman provincial Æ 20.2 mm, 5.81 g, 10 h. Lydia, Thyatira, AD 50-54. Obv: ΤΙ ΚΛΑYΔΙΟC CЄΒΑCΤΟC, bare head of Claudius right. Rev: ΑΓΡΙΠΠΙΝΑΝ CЄΒΑCΤΗΝ ΘΥΑΤΙΡΗΝΟΙ, draped bust of Agrippina right.
