Did anybody mention this is a private enterprise and the (US) 1st ammendment doesn't apply? As long as we don't discriminate against you because you're a member of a protected class... telling you to shut your pie hole is perfectly legal. Being an <redacted/> is not a protected class! If you don't like it, you could start up your own forum. Cover all the costs. Have the appropriate and necessary security provisions in place. Make it attractive so people will join you. Become an expert on the DCMA, GDPR and other rules in other countries. Stay within all of the various laws and other rules so you don't get shut down by your government. Stay within the TOS so the service provider doesn't shut you down for being a malware dropper or a Spamer. Then yeah you can say what you want. It gets lonely in your little corner of the cesspit but that's what (US) freedom of speech is all about. As long as you don't break the laws you can say what you want and the government can't say boo.
baseball21, posted: Can we stop with the Gods nonsense? They are in control of the forum and can basically set any rules they want for the forum, that doesn't make someone a God. It doesn't make them ignorant either.
Happens that this week I am a guest in my daughters home. I raised her. She is my flesh and blood. Fact remains, I am in HER home as a guest this week. Seems somewhat obvious to me anyway that as a guest I am expected to maintain my absolute highest level of courtesy because I want to be welcomed back again...... Like it or not, we are all guests here in Peters house. Expecting his guests to be polite and well mannered while here is certainly not unreasonable and frankly is somewhat surprising that some folks don’t recognize that.
Generally speaking, if you don't have anything nice to say then you should say nothing at all. This goes twenty times over when you're visiting. Most people can take a little friendly criticism and this applies at PCGS and here. But it's best to even avoid the word politics here. This is without a doubt one of the finest sites on the net. Most of the problems here are caused by its users rather than the rules and their enforcement. Indeed, the biggest problem is that authors are not defining the subjects sufficiently in the threads. Even when you hover over it to see the first paragraph the subject isn't always apparent. I'm sure I miss a lot of great threads because I don't open a thread if the subject is uncertain. It takes a lot to make a great site and not only our hosts need a big "thank you", but most of the users as well.
If anybody wants to volunteer to be the moderator of this or any other site, have at it. Rest assured you won’t be competing with me.
I've been banned on CU....TWICE, and here I have never even gotten a suspension. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? Actually in their own little "world" of the forum, yes it does.
Truthfully, I do not think anyone really wants to be a moderator. If so, they probably should not be. I do not believe that Doug and Peter would take volunteers and that is a sane judgment IMO. At the time I wanted the forum to be safe for my young relatives who seemed to inherit the insanity that coins can become, so when asked, knowing the administration had the similar thoughts that I had, especially concerning the rules on politics, language, etc. , so I said yes to do my part. There are no classes or manuals to go with the position, just the administration's guidance and help. It is certainly not the pay ( there is none), but instead the knowledge that I have done the best I can AND I have learned a TON of information on areas of numismatics that I did not know. It of course doesn't satisfy all. I have had the owners of 2 other forums ask if I would consider moving to theirs in the same position and I gracefully told them I appreciated the offer, but CT is my home, as it can be yours if you follow the simple rules. We are all different , and the dynamics and make up of the forum is shifting, the Old timers here can aid in making that a positive result for old and new. Jim.
For the umteenth time, I was not given 5 warnings. I had no history of disciplinary actions on the forum, and I was one of its most active members at the time. Furthermore, you were privy to the discussion with Peter and you know he admitted to me that the moderator WAY overreacted. If the facts supported your position, there would not have been a revolt the following day on this forum. The fact is that the moderator did not have just cause to ban me, the owner of this site agreed, and you guys settled on a 30 day suspension in order to save face for the rookie moderator. For those interested in the real story, you can read about it in the threads linked below. The first thread is on the NGC forum where I told everyone that I had been banned, and the second one is the revolt thread on this forum. Protect Toned Coins by Destroying the Toned Coin Market You MUST Read This Statement And btw Doug, I have always defended you as one of the most fair moderators on any forum I have ever been a member. If you had been the moderator on duty that night, I am 100% certain I would never have been banned.
Wow! I'm shocked you were banned, but I won't say who got banned, what or when as I don't want to be banned myself!
Geez, I got no warnings at CU. Simply made a purchase, paid immediately plus extra for expedited shipping, got no updates, no order confirmation, and no delivery, no explanation, no nothing. No problem taking my money, that part worked. Did I out in public? No, simply sent a PM letting the CU member know his customer service sucked. For that, I was bammed. Wouldn't have even made the purchase without clicking his sig line link. How's that fair?
I'm glad you are here Jim. You do a great job of keeping us crazy folks in line. I'm sure Peter and Doug feel the same. If there was not any control of the politics and language on this site, I would leave. You set a strong example of how folks should act on this forum.
The truth is...being a moderator is a hard job. No matter what you do, you are always the bad guy in someone's eyes...so someone always complains. There really isn't much training...but the admins do their best to guide the rest of the team. It truly is a thankless job. Another truth is...that everyone who works on the staff is a person. Everyone is capable of failures and mistakes. As a general rule, the staff does a good job and sticks together...and tries to clean up each other's mistakes when they do happen (which isn't very often). But, mistakes do happen because these are people just like you and I. I remember the issue with @Lehigh96, I was on the staff when that happened. I was not the moderator involved but I remember when it happened (I was simply an observer to it...but able to see both sides). Lehigh is a member of the forum who I have always really liked and it was unfortunate that things got out of hand like they did. I was happy when it was worked out and things came back to normal. In my opinion, that situation had a few mistakes...on both sides. It would be nice to let the past be the past. In my opinion the fact that @Lehigh96 (and I could be wrong) is still upset by this...is a testament to how great this place really is. How attached we become to it because it is a great community. I understand why he is upset...even years later. I went through something similar and my experience still bothers me. For me, its because I really care about this community and I really like it here. I tried to leave after my experience...and I couldn't. Because this is a great community. Not to be a peacekeeping hippie or anything...but it would be nice if this issue could finally be put to bed. If I remember right, this happened in 2011.
Yes, I have a special name for PCGS but I would never say it online as I'm sure to get banned no matter which forum I said it on!
Did he leave? I haven't been super active for a little bit (busy with real life stuff unfortunately).
