The coin above seems to evidence extreme deteriorated die doubling. If this were a case of EDDD, shouldn’t there be other evidence of imminent die death? Looking closer, I think there are die scratches almost everywhere on the reverse of the coin. (I also see die scratches on the obverse.) Is my reasoning correct? Is this extreme deteriorated die doubling and die scratches? Thanks in advance.
Split Plate Doubling Keep in mind the copper plating is spec'd at 8 microns thick I think? so if the minting pressure is a bit more than normal, or the plating is a tad too thin, it gets stretched too much and splits. So you can see the zinc core in the split area which has no copper . http://www.error-ref.com/split-plate-doubling and https://errorvariety.com/OFD/PSD.html and http://www.lincolncentsonline.com/mechanicalDoubling.html just remember .. that post 1982 cents host a whole boatload of problems. They'll totally eat themselves over time. they create their own problems due to the thin copper plating over a more reactive submetal (zinc). The same reason Paint on your car bubbles up anytime the metal underneath rusts or any other impurities.
Thank you @Clawcoins - Split plate doubling! Dang! I knew of it. Of course. So, how do all those scratches figure in? Do you see them as evidence of a die that is deteriorating? A separate issue from the split plate doubling?
I see some green in 'em "scratches" from your pics ... so I would just think the plating was ripping all the live, long day; but I'm just taking a guess on that from your pics.
Thanks everybody....That was a great lesson!! You all are wonderful and patient teachers (even if ya can't help laughing at me sometimes! Lol I don't mind at all). I learned a lot and really appreciate it.
