08 D Monroe T over G EDGE LETTER ERROR I just found this in a roll of Monroe Dollars. Very obvious to see even without loupe. Look. Im hoping Mike Diamond can add some insight on this. I have already found 3 other similar coins from the same roll. Tom
Coin World reported on some Prez dollars (Monroe I think) that had overlapping letters in the edge lettering. One had some sort of planchet flaw where the edge was not complete; this coin may not have rotated fully in the edge lettering machine due to the flaw. They were awaiting an explanation from the Mint for the other coin.
I presume the extra letter is raised (that's what it looks like, anyway). If so, then this is a contact mark, not an error. The edges of dollars bang together forcefully in mint machinery or counting machines, transferring devices from the edge of one coin to another. Since the edge lettering is incuse, the transferred impression is raised.
