This was a good currency week! Got a 295 error today in the cash register, a 2003 $10 star note, a 1988A and 1985 $1 bills. Is there a market for the 295 error? Where would a guy look to estimate value? Thanks- Mike
Mike, I know a thng or two about 295s and haven't seen one in circulation in YEARS. Nice find. I need a full serial number and face plate number to determine rarity though as there are about 330 known combinations. Pics would be nice as well. Hontonai, This thread explains it. http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=31219 clembo
nice find. years of casual searching and thousands upon thousands of $1 notes searched - not a single one found. and here you casualy found one :thumb: very cool
When the article was first published (don't remember when or where I read, just know that I read it), they were actually quite common, as evidenced by clembo having found thousands of them when they came out.
The 295 error is a pretty obscure error, but very fun to find. I also looked through tons of ones (I manage three retail stores) and this is the first I have found. The web notes still elude me. The serial number is I76844460G, FW A 332, A1, 9 with the 295 on the reverse. Condition is circulated, no holes or tears but obvious folds both ways. It is unmarked and still rather crisp for its age (no crumpling or washing). Sorry for no pics- the queen and prince went to the beach and took the camera. Thanks for the help. Clembo- it was your post a couple of months ago that got me looking again. When I saw 1995, I almost didn't bother but I remembered you saying they were tougher to find than you might think. I found hundreds of 95's during the Christmas rush and struck out, only to have one show up in the slow season. Mike
Block I..G, run 13, fp332 looks pretty common as 295s go. There's a census online here; it hasn't been updated in years, but that's probably mostly because nobody's still finding these things any more.
Glad you kept your eyes open Mike. Yes, it is a fairly "common" note but seeing how many you went through it makes more sense as to how many more will ever be found. Here's my "really boring" post on these. Older info but probably not too far off. Don't think hoards are being discovered. http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=31687 Keep looking buddy as there is a lot of stuff to be found! clembo T
