Looking for examples for a U.S. type set, so at least VF. Do these prices sound reasonable? I've included the years that I think are the highest mintages therefore the lower priced. The target prices are my best guesses (being a non-expert) based on completed auctions at Heritage. I used an old Red Book for mintages. $1 Liberty Head Target price: $350? Target years: 1849, 1850, 1850-o*, 1851, 1852, 1853, 1853-o*, 1854 * "O" mintmarks preferred, if just a little more expensive $1 Princess $300 (?) 1854, 1855; 1856-1889 $5 Classic/Liberty Head ("Half Eagle") $500 1840-1864 $3 "Princess" $600 (?) 1854-57, 1874, 1878, 1888, 1889
I am basically a type collector for all gold coins from 650BC to present. I am trying for MS/FDC quality. I am looking for a Turban head AV 5 Dollar. I cannot afford the MS-64+ examples So, I am lowering my quality standards down to MS-62....at that grade these are more affordable. I just picked up a MS-64 Three Dollar common date 1878 I will try for a MS-63 "Classic Head" Quarter Eagle later this year. After that an elusive Charlotte Mint Quarter Eagle in MS-63. Seems US prices have dropped a lot in past 15 years, which is good, world/ ancients have done the opposite. I have gotten all my 35 or so US gold coins in past 4 years. John
Last week at a coin show I bought two AU Liberty head dollars for $225.00 each. Common dates. I am unsure of the princess.......... I believe you are a bit high on the Half Eagle. But I have to say I have not purchased any since fall and I know gold has been rising and I was paying either $400.00 or $425.00. I can't really remember. But was a good bit less than $500.00.
Thanks @Randy Abercrombie. That is good info. Thanks. How much would it save me, do you think, to drop down to VG?
