What are your opinions on the toning of this cent? NT or AT? Edit: Please feel free to provide your reasoning for your vote.
I think that is where someone grabbed it with fingers. EDIT: IDK It just looks like a thumb and index finger with maybe salty sweat. But I am no expert!! LOL
I just found a penny sort of like that one in my desk drawer, idk why it was like that but I never put it there on purpose so I would say natural.
It looks like the result of an improperly stored proof set, maybe in a hot & humid attic or basement.
perhaps, but I though PVC made coins get that icky gunk but that could just be silver. I am no expert.
@TypeCoin971793 @Evan8 @physics-fan3.14 @desertgem @baseball21 @cpm9ball Any thoughts from you folks? It seems to be neck and neck at the moment.
Proofs are interesting when it comes to toning. Im gonna say natural. Could be wrong but there are some way more questionable examples that i have seen. This one probably is market acceptable imho.
Its ugly and deserves to corrode. I think the magenta contours follow a AT fluid flow pattern rather a natural air flow in a capsule or not. IMO. Jim
Well, here’s my vote and reasoning; hopefully I do the spoiler right: Spoiler I think it’s NT, since the rest of the set seems to be in great shape and shows no sign of mishandling. Storage could come into question, but I’m under the assumption that the other coins would show some sort of inkling that they were stored improperly or exposed to heat. Edit: would you agree with my reasoning?
pop a bunch of proofs in a toaster oven on 350 degrees for a while and pull one out every so often and compare.
I am gonna say natural. but what does that mean? I ate potato chips touched a cent and naturally it toned!! Ha Ha Ha. At least I think I am funny sometimes. The wife says dif !
Have you looked at the spoiler? I know it won't change your mind about it being ugly, but what about it being AT?
It becomes more feasible certainly, but I have seen altered mint packaging a few times, so I will vote suspicious and of course still ugly Jim
We must also consider that the packaging around the cent is either defective or damaged, which would explain why only that coin toned. I’m sticking with my original assertion that this proof set was improperly stored at some point.
