    It was in 1852

though back then I think it would be comparable to $3k today ?
money back then is different than today. It was mostly coins, and coins were mostly either in copper, silver or gold.

    And you had
    Copper:
    Half Cents, Cents,
    silver:
3 cent, half dimes (5 cents), dimes, quarters, half dollars, dollars (38.1mm diameter)
then Gold Dollars, Gold $2.5, and GOLD $5, gold $10, $20.

Gold dollars didn't circulate a lot. They were small, and at least or more than a day's wages. Imagine walking around with a $300 bill. Not easy to spend because most people couldn't make change. They were also easy to lose.
The two small southern gold mints didn't make anything but gold coins, so change had to come from Philadelphia, and maybe New Orleans.

You need to crimp those staples down, and really should send it off to PCGS or NGC for grading/authentication.

Be sure to flatten the points down on the back side of the 2x2. Otherwise, you're liable to scratch another coin.

Well Miss Monstermommy.... That is a rather special one! I am with @TheFinn and would like to encourage you to get that one better protected. I know that a slab can feel distant and sterile but you sure may want to consider putting that one in a slab..... I been collecting nearly fifty years and have been pining for a Dahlonega gold. You enjoy that fine little slice of gold history!

Edit... My apologies for drooling over your coin and not addressing your question!

As far as these little fellers getting lost: as a teenager (55+ years ago) we had a customer, a man in his 80s, in our café who had been a tailor in his youth in Chicago. He related that he found many $1 and $2.50 gold coins in the corners of peoples' suit coats and pants pockets. He indicated no obligation to return them to the owners.

Im somewhat new to collecting, maybe a year or so,I can see how these gold pieces become lost, its thin and small.I am extremely lucky to have found it,while he was willing to sell.I didnt realize how rare it is,Im going to get it graded,I have some other gems I want to send at the same time.
