I am sorting through a bunch of silver coins that was buried in 1939. I need your help in determining which of it is junk and which is good. Let's start here.

I have 183 Mercury 1935 D coins. They are mostly in VG to F condition with a few in VF and XF. Would the VG to F be considered junk? My goal is to keep the best for my collection and sell the rest to a coin store or collector.

How would a person find someone that would be able to advise me without wanting to take me to the cleaners?

Keep what you like and sell the rest at eBay or some other auction, if you go to a dealer you will probably be disappointed in the offer. So long as the coins are original and problem free there's nothing wrong with a VG-F 1935 D it's not junk.

What do you think the 35 D Merc in VG would be worth?

Accurately describe them/great photos and sell a roll or two on Ebay. Then if you want to sell them to a dealer or collector you will have a better idea of what you can get in the market. Just my opinion. I think you will be amazed at the difference in price.

    Good Luck

Coin Values says $2.50 in VG8. E coin prices says $5 in G4.

I think roll prices do better - people get goofy over rolls sometimes.

That is a very good idea. I have never sold anything on ebay, but it can't be too difficult. What would you do with 720 standing liberty quarters that have no date? Junk for sure? I have checked and re-checked them.

Sell them for as close to their $3,900 melt value as I could get!

I would check them again to try to separate the early years versus the later years. You might get a little more for the earlier years! You might want to read up a little on this series.

I am pulling out the VG and XF/AU for sure and will keep those in my collection for posterity. Putting other coins in rolls to sell on ebay. Now the tricky question...when does a person sell the junk silver?????? Sell it tomorrow for $17.85/oz, wait and try for $20.00+, or risk it falling back to $4.00+-/oz. Whadayadoo???? :headbang:

If those Standing Quarters are all no dates, atleast check for stars under the eagle. If theres no stars then its a type 1 and you have a date narrowed in on. Anyhow, no date Standing Quarters still sell for more than melt value on ebay.

Wow, thanks for the tips. Only problem is I don't know what the difference between a type 1 and 2. Please educate me.

Which is more valuable? Stars under eagle or no stars, and what would the value be with no date?

He just told you - "check for stars under the eagle. If theres no stars then its a type 1"

I've been looking at images on MSN. Type one...no stars under the eagle and exposed breasts. Type 2...stars under the eagle and covered breasts. But the values appear to be fairly close on both. So I am assuming that the type 1 would indicate a definate date of 1916 or 1917. Right? What would it be worth with no visible date?

You know, I have to say that this is one of my favorite coin designs. Really beautiful. It has been pretty sad going through all these coins and because of their design...there is no date. Some have been in really nice shape otherwise.

Wow! I have looked on ebay and you guys are so right! Even the dateless ones are going from 7 to 20 bucks! Impressive! I'm gulping down my coffee and heading in there to begin sorting....again!:smile Really appreciate all the help. There is a lot to learn with this hobby, so glad I found this site and the wealth of knowledge.
