I feel the same way. But, I don't like to ask for things in a coin shop because you immediately alert the owner and the chances of bargaining are gone.

  3. I am a very casual collector. If I see something I like and I have the extra money I will buy it. Years ago I went into a popular coin shop in Fairfield OH. Because I really knew very little about collecting at the time, I was (literally) snickered at. Needless to say I never went back. Except for a bunch of silver pesos I bought at an antique mall, everything since then I have bought online.

I have a very good relationship with my LCS. I'm there and I always get "the discount"
I wish he would have a little bit more diverse of a selection. He has enough 90%, junk and uncirculated to go around. I would really like for him to have more early copper, he could really benefit with more certified early 20th coinage.

Have you told him that? Shop keepers appreciate knowing what their customers want.

Why does everyone want "certified"? A 1919-S penny is a 1919-S penny with or without certification. I don't think most US general circulation coinage was ever counterfeited. And, why pay a premium. I look for date, mint and eye appeal to fill a blank in an album. Plus, can you imagine the overhead cost to stock certified coins? If the dealer would have that extra cost you probably wouldn't get those "discounts".

Itd be nice if the LCS stocked inventory specifically to what I collect, so i always have a new selection to look at. I'd also like for them to grade and price everything accurately. Too often I take the guys word for it since he normally gives me good deals, only to get home and find a staple scratch or that he calculated something wrong.

Well, I know this might be a little off the subject, but a little relevant. If you're ever in Arizona on vacation, there is a little coin store (large enough to hold 10 people) in a small shop in Old Town Scottsdale. At first, I thought that it would be kind of pricy see how it's in Scottsdale. But to my surprise...it's not. He has a lot of rare coins you would NEVER see any place else. He has stuff from old US Bills to Roman Coins. Place is called Republic Rare Coins....great place! Owner is a Vet!

Just started going to a coin shop that has a bid board. Not only is the selection eclectic but everyone has the opportunity to put items up for bid.

I don't blame you. I would do the same thing.
