Any other oldtimers know of "Mr. Wm. Dougherty?"

Coin collecting has been a wonderful hobby, on the back burner for many years, but now full speed ahead in retirement. My father got me started, but every once in a while I think of an elderly gentleman who had a very positive influence on me when I was in my teen years in the early 1960s.

I had advertised in Numismatic News, offering to buy war nickels for $2.60 a roll. I bought hundreds of rolls, and, unfortunately, had some stolen and sold the remainder when I needed college money.

One of the individuals from whom I purchased war nickels was an elderly man named William Dougherty. I assumed he was elderly from his handwriting. He took the time to write me interesting letters, and we kept up an occasional correspondence long after our transaction was over. The fact that I can recall his name after more than fifty-five years is evidence of his influence in my life. I'm assuming that going away to college, girls and selling off my collection led to the end of our correspondence (or, perhaps his death).

I don't recall his hometown, but somehow Ohio or thereabouts seems right.

Anyone ever have contact with this gentleman (a gentleman in the true sense of the word)?

Can't say that I have and I apologize for taking this sideways but it seems certain people leave an indelible mark on our lives this way. I spent endless hours in Canaan, Ct. in my youth, at a coin shop run by a man named Roy LaCroix. He always had time for me when customers were not there, to give me any kind of possible history behind the fascinating coins he had for sale. He was elderly at the time but also shared his stories on how he acquired many of his coins overseas when he was in the service. Some folks you can just never forget, especially their kindness. I also had a special relationship with a fellow collector of stamps in Wales for over 20 years and many pen pals from all over the world.

No apology needed @tommyc03. I think your experience and mine highlight the opportunity for each of us to make a positive difference/impression on others, be they young or old.
