I'm 99% sure this is a fake, I found it while searching thru a bag of full date buffalos I purchased. Grade is VG-10 at best. Pics are with a digital blue microscope.

Not my area of expertise Mr. Merc but I'd sure be happy for you if it WAS the real deal.

Thanks Clembo, I'm going to get a small tripod for my digital camera this weekend and take some pics with that.

While easy to counterfeit, the three-legged Buffalo when genuine displays a moth-eaten appearance on hindquarters of the beast, and a thin dappled line resembling pee descending in an arc from the little thingy hanging there under the beast's belly

Is this the same bag you asked about in your other thread? If so what did you end up paying if you don't mind the asking?

Like Jim pointed out above, on a geniune 3-legged Buffalo nickel "If the leg is missing the buffalo is pi$$ing".

Well no peeing that I can see. The D looks like it was tooled, that's why I thought it was a fake. Yes TwoSon, same bag, got him down to $70, about 65% were mintmarked, a lot of '36-S and only a few teens, a lot of full horns, it was fun searching.

Hmm, I'm not too sure about it, I'll leave this to the nickel experts. Best of luck man. :thumb:

You might try to post other pics with a different background color! The red gives an eerie blood cast hue to the Nickel and in true color, we might be able to see if there is the line of raised dots (yes, which give the appearance the the Buffalo is peeing, heck you would be peeing if someone cut off your leg!). The Mint Mark looks like it could be re-punched. This is another reason to have pics in true color!

I think it is real - The only part I could make out is on the neck - I have made a few pics for you to compare with - One is a side by side wher from what I see the diagnostic on the neck matches - The other pic is a superimposed pic matched up-
In addition I think I also see the straight line that extends from the back leg out under the bisons willy- Pics also attached
Or heck maybe Im just seeing things:rolleyes:
    Cool !

Thanks jaxdad for taking the time to post those photos, I just don't think my coin is real. I purchased a copy stand today so I'll be posting some pics next weekend hopefully. Got a copy stand for under $32 shipped, if anyone is interested where to get one PM me and I'll give you the link.

OK, here's a better photo of the fake 3 legged buffalo. Notice the bad attempt at tooling the D

Wow what a differance - With the color & focus of the original pic it looks very different. I think the mint mark looks bad too-

Yes jaxsdad, the first pics were taken with a QX5 digital microscope. These were taken with a digital camera. Yes the mintmark is the dead giveaway as I stated about the bad attempt at tooling the D. What do you guys think I should do with it. I was just going to put it in a 2X2 and mark it counterfieted 3 legged buffalo.

If you are worried about someone trying to pass it off as genuine after it leaves your collection, you could always engrave it with "FAKE" with an engraver.
