I know that the 1982 Roosevelt dime no P is a coin that everyone searches for. But wouldn't it apply to other Roosevelt dimes like from 1978 no P mint mark? Why is the 1982 no P a rarity and not one from another year? I'm just curious sorry to bother you guys but am just trying to figure things out for future references. Any clarification is appreciated as I'm still learning. Thanks

The US Mint did not start using the P mint mark on Roosevelt Dimes until 1980.

The one to search for is the no S from the proof set. Not an ordinary circulation coin.

Like @thomas mozzillo said, the Mint started putting the Philly mintmark on the dimes in 1980, but for 1982, it was mistakenly omitted on one (?) of the working dies, FS-501 (Strong Strike) and FS-502 (Weak Strike).

Is there a web site that show the difference between the two types?
I did not see anything on variety vista.

I did find this PCGS aritcle in my search. But no photos.

Coincidentally, Clyde is the guardian of two very significant coins, each notable because it illustrates a very distinguishable die crack at 1 o'clock on the obverse. The die crack provides additional clues as to how many of these errors were created in 1982.
A variety with an error. I wonder why he only keep two.

The only photos I've seen are in the CPG. The Weak Strike is identified by the "82" of the date that looks like a partially grease-filled die. The "Strong Strike" is just the opposite, showing a fully-formed "82".

That caused the die to crack. Crack was noticed so the die was pulled early so about 5000 total minted. I have 3 & they are all FS-501 with cracked die. All CRH c.2017

Is the FS-501 the Strong Strike? I'm thinking if they have the Die Crack it should be the Strong Strike.
And can you post a close up photo of your Die Crack?

Yes,all 3 are the strong later stage with the die crack. All are in my SDB up north with most of my collection until April while we winter in Florida. That’s all I have on my cellphone. But your requested closeups will be posted, for sure.

I would appreciate that so much. It will be great to have another coin to compare with.

The third one is pretty worn but I can still see a little of the crack in hand. Helps to know where to look. Maybe I can get better pics tomorrow in the daylight.

Thanks for posting. This really is helpful, and interesting to say that "yes" your coin and mine came from the same dies.
