@Goodeye ...at a quick first glance, I was thinking a die chip was involved...but, as noted by steve.e, it was altered by contact that flattened the right half of the E. Your coin is a very well travelled wheat, most of the rest of the obverse design is flattened as well. Worth maybe 3 cents...Spark
