Early 80's I worked as a teller for a bank. we would get canvas bags of new coins, which all had to be hand rolled. in one bag of halves, I found this coin....a three strike planchet error 1980D Kennedy half dollar. I am curious to know if it has any value....any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you
Welcome to the neighborhood! As P&G said, it's a triple clip. This happens when blanks are punched out of the sheet of coin metal. Chris
Very cool! I wish I collected when you could find these type of errors in a Mint sewn bag. I have no idea on the value.
Thank you P&G and cpm9ball...the info is fascinating! any direction as to where I can go to find a potential value?
I am sure someone will post shortly with a value. Just so you know most of the value will come from the condition of the coin, so make sure that you do your best to protect the coin from scratches, finger prints etc.
Thank you. Will admit, there will be finger prints since I did handle it back in 1980 when I took it out of the bag. However, since then, its been in a envelope...which was then put inside a plastic bag. I've only recently taken it out so I could take picture of it, and I wore a glove when I did. Hope this helps.
Do you have a local coin dealer, or possibly a Hobby Lobby. You can buy coin flips that will keep the coin from moving around too much.
An example graded by NGC just sold for over $200 on eBay. Getting yours graded would cost money ($30-40), and I don't think yours would get quite as high a grade as that one, but, yeah -- "worth something". P.S. Welcome to CoinTalk!
Hi Jeff Thank you for the info....it's something to consider, getting it graded. I've got a few other "odd" coins, may ask about those later.
Welcome to CT. That's a great looking triple clip. You should have it slabbed and yes there is some value to it.
I'll give it some thought, and research the companies you mentioned. Not sure I feel comfortable about mailing it off... Thank you all so much! Cheryl
