Came across this article this morning. A collection of 301 cent coins went for a record $10.7. The collection included a 1793 and 1794 specimens. More on the auction in this article.

    Sorry broken link. Fixed now.

NPR covered the story this morning and through the entire piece referred to the coins as "pennies"... (insert "nails on blackboard" smilie here).

They wrapped the story by playing "Pennies From Heaven".

Where's the "comment" link on their website...?!?

I also note that USA Today placed their piece in the "Offbeat" section-- shows you what they think as well. Although at least they left in the references to "cents" in the text, even with the headline "Penny auction nets $10.7 million."

The Huzak collection was so hot, it merited its own Heritage auction catalog. Now THAT'S strong.

    Hello everyone,

I guess it is no surprise that those who don;t know about collecting have such a low opinion of this hobby. However I bet that story cause a few more to think twice about collecting as well.

    Regards,

I was enjoying my weekly cigar at the local cigar lounge yesterday when a friend of mine picked up the Denver Post, and I immediately noticed a picture of that 1794 on one of the pages he was ruffling through. I've been aware of the Husak collection coming up for auction since it's been mentioned in every issue of Coin World in some form or another for the past month now, but I was still shocked to see the total amount realized.

The Denver Post story was just an AP article, but it was hard not to cringe when reading it, since they, too, used the word 'penny' over and over. :rolling:
