How many of you guys/gals "Cherry Pick" coins off of the internet. It could be any site such as VCoins, Ebay, etc., where the coin or coins are being offered for the right price and often unattributed by the sellers? I'm talking about really checking (getting the reference books out, magnifying glass, printing pictures, loupe, etc.) the various defining aspects of the coin pictures being shown and making decisions to purchase or not based upon your findings I'll be honest I do it when looking for Capped Bust Halves and since the coins are rather large it's pretty easy at times. Take Care Ben
I would NEVER cheat the internet in such a blatant manner. Are you kidding, lol??? Thats part of the fun and a fav pastime of mine.....my desk has a referance library and my puter has a CONECA disc with the top 100Rpm's and Omm's , IF at all possible I blow up pics on every coin I TRY to cherrypick. Have several 09-S/S in my dbl row boxes that came that way
Do I sit down and decided....today I'm going to cherrypick someone off the internet?.....no. Have I done it before?....yes. Will I do it again?.....yes. Speedy
Cherrypicking the internet Yes, absolutely, positively, you betcha, you gotta believe I do. Especially when I am looking for a specific coin... the best is always better if gotten at the same price. The problem with some of the pictures is they are fuzzy, they get very pixelated when I try to use a magnifying glass to view them. How does one go about really getting in close and personal? Thanks jeankay
Yes, I do it all the time! Some may think that is wrong but it is no different than CherryPicking from a Coin Dealer at a Shop or at a Coin Show. I have my Loupes, books and some plan of action when I start looking on eBay! If I come across a coin that shows potential for an Error or Variety, I will copy and paste it to my email (AOL) which allows me to not only enlarge the picture if needed, it also allows me to edit the picture. This allows me to really check out the coin without saving the picture to my PC's hard drive. I use my Loupes when the pictures become degraded and out of focus when they are enlarged too much and have to decrease the siize to bring the coin into focus. I have to admit that what you sometimes think that you see in the pictures, is not what is actually there! I have made a few good CherryPicks but have made many more bad ones. I have found that is good to ask the Seller to email you better pictures if the time left on the Auction allows. In this way, you can make a somewhat better analysis of the Error or Variety before making a decision to bid. Frank
I cherrypick whenever I can wherever I can. Look at it this way. If you don't one of two things will happen. 1. Someone else will cherrypick it. 2. It wil be sold as is and possibly not be available to cherrypick again. I do it with currency too. Especially when a coin dealer is selling it. They have a tendency not to do the research on currency.
Coin World had an article recently about a guy (who just happens to attribute coins for a major TPG) who bought a Morgan dollar at an auction for $50 knowing it was a rare VAM worth $10,000. If I cherrypicked a coin worth 200X what I paid for it I don't think I would boast about it - and name the auction or the coin dealer in Coin World. If I cherrypicked the coin from eBay it would be OK to boast about it in a major publication I suppose. Just remember - the IRS is also interested in your good fortune.
I don't know if this counts, but my "cherry-picking" has been limited to finding stuff in weird places or times on e-bay. For example, about six months ago, got a complete set of Jeffersons (up to 1961) for $24 shipping included. It ended at 3:00 a.m., was listed in some antique section and only said "nickles" (misspelled) in the heading - no mention of album, Jefferson, etc.).
I certainly look for bargains on things I think are underpriced, but that really isn't cherrypicking. It's really amazing how prices have soared over the past 5 years.
Agreed, and taken a lot of the fun out of collecting. Increased prices and a limited stock of nice conditions and better dates.
Basically the same here. Although there are days I say I'm going to cherrypick someone. And on those days I never do.
cherry picking........ of course in order to cherry pick, YOU MUST BE EDUCATED! this is why i constantly study the coins that interest me, it adds to the fun of the hobby! steve
I really feel sorry for those people that have to rely on things like ebay or any internet organization. By me we have at least 3 coin shows a month, numerous flea markets, coin stores, hobby stores that carry coins, etc. I've looked at ebay many times but so far have never seen a coin that I couldn't beat the price at a coin show. No postage, handling, restocking fees, insurances and on and on and on. Just the price of a coin and you get to see the real coin, not a faked, faded, out of focul photo. Around here there is just to much compitition in almost everything. We have gun shows, knive shows, sports card shows, car shows, camera shows, computer shows, dog and cat shows and many, many more. I just could not imagine purchasing anything for the prices I've seen on ebay or even department stores.
