There is (at least was a few minutes minute ago) an exceptional example of this iconic coin listed on Vcoins - if I was younger I would snap it up in a heart beat!
Very nice coin @octavius! I got talked out of mine (by a close collector friend) many years ago. I should never have let it happen for I have regretted it ever since - at the time I thought I could always find another one - now it is too late
I will be lucky to make it another year due to some severe medical problems and I am in the coin disposal mode (or, as they say these days, I am “downsizing”) right now. If that coin would have been listed when I was, say, eighty five, I would have bought it.
It's a great type and one I am still wanting (IdesofMarch01 bought the most recent great example). This coin is more expensive than I'd pay considering its patina, cheek mark, strike, and soft reverse. @octavius - your coin is a particularly nice example! Best of luck with your health! Please keep us up to date with how you're feeling.
Thank you @AncientJoe - yes, I would have negotiated for a better price. This coin does have very nice “sister” depictions though - and (to me) a very pleasing patina. Usage wear doesn’t bother me too much.
Somewhere around seventy years ago I decided that there were three Ancient coin issues that I wanted to own above all others: 1. Julius Caesar DICT PERPETVO denarius 2. Claudius IMPER RECEPT denarius 3. Caligula “three sisters” sestertius I have owned all three - not perfect specimens, for evidence of wear and usage is fine, even desirable, for me - historical association is my thing and I like to handle my coins without undue apprehension. I let the Claudius denarius and the “three sisters” sestertius get away - much to my regret. I still have my Julius Caesar denarius however. Of course, we named our Springer Spaniel (now in doggie heaven) “Agrippina” (my favorite of the sister’s names). That was a great benefit in making Veterinarian appointments - everyone in the office knew her name (although I don’t think any of them knew mine).
@Gary R. Wilson - this may have been asked previously, but do you own the “three sisters” coin featured as your Avatar?
Unfortunately no but I do own a 3 Sisters. I also used to own a Claudius Imper recept denarius which I sold. I do have a Caesar fourree lifetime denarius. I also wish I had the Claudius denarius back.
Hopefully we have you around much longer than that. It's enjoyable having you actively post here and hope you keep it up. I have a 103 year old hospice patient that I've had for 4 years, partly because she continues to engage with us.
Thank you Randy. I still enjoy life enormously and intend to stick around as long as I can. Yesterday I talked with my old USAF boss, Col. Richard E. Cole, the last surviving WWII Doolittle Raider and Jimmy Doolittle’s co-Pilot (“Thirty seconds over Tokyo”) on the phone - he will be 104 this year and I want to enjoy as many more conversations with him as I can.
Well congratulations on owning a “three sisters” sestertius Gary! At least we can commiserate with each other on the loss of our IMPER RECEPT denarius, which I also dearly wish I had back!
This seller might negotiate. I recently negotiated a lower price for a Nero Claudius Drusus he had listed on VCoins recently. But it had been listed for some time.
Yes, Gary, I have bought from him, and negotiated with him, on a few occasions. I have always been satisfied with his coins and the way he conducts his business. I briefly considered going for this coin - but I am committed to reducing my collection in accordance with the criteria I laid down here previously.
