Thanks Mat, the smaller denominations of the Dukat are really neat. Even the 1/32 Dukats from Nurnberg/ Regensburg have finely detailed designs, and they where from 1700. Dukaten/ Zecchini where minted from the massive 105/100 Dukaten to the teeny 1/32 type.

    Thanks...
Yes Ferdinand I brother of Karl V (Holy Roman Emperor) seized the empty throne of Hungary, after Lajos II and his army were wiped out in 1526 at Mohacs. However, the victor Sulieman allowed the legitimite heir Johannes Zapolya I to succeed and be loyal to the Sultan. Eventually, after many wars, Ferdinand I became King of a part of the old Hungarian Kingdom, while Johannes I Zapolya was Prince of the other part now called "Transylvania" In 1683 Transylvania was incorporated into the Holy Roman Empire again, under Leopold I "The Hogmouth".

i had read a long while back about Vlad being in kahoots with the Hapsburg in the wars against the Ottomans, but it's quite complicated and very interesting to say the least..:)

Correct, Vlad Tepes (The Impaler) was allied with the Habsburgs vs the Ottoman Empire. This guy made Josef Stalin look like a boy scout. One time he figured there were too many old people in Wallachia, since they could not work or contribute to the economy, he had them rounded up and impaled. His chief executioner complained of the smell of the rotting corpses, and Vlad had him impaled on a really high stake, so that thestench would not affect his sense of smell. Impaling was a process that would allow the victim to suffer in agony for days. image53.jpg

yeah, he is not remembered well by history...and is by all accounts the original vampire..he was thrown in prison by the Hapsburgs because the nobles told stories on him to them, but he was set free then shortly died in battle thereafter..

I am always surprised how detailed these little buddies are. Sure it depends on the condition, but it's amazing what they were able to put on some little piece of gold. My favourite designs are with the madonna on the reverse side.

I checked, on Ma-Shops are over 11.000 pieces of Habsburg available Edited: Please do not self- promote products if you are involved in the company~ Read the rules please .There are a lot of dealer and collectors in our area with Habsburg.
