Are you sure it's silver? If he's thinking that the "s" in 1914-S means silver, it actually is a mint mark that means the coin was minted in San Francisco. A 1914-D would indicate that the coin was minted in Denver, and no mintmark (or a "p" on modern coins) means that it was minted in Philadelphia. The $20 Double Eagle was definitely a gold coin.
