I’m at a coin show today and tomorrow. I plan to make a few nice purchases tomorrow. One dealer that is obviously a high end dealer has a stunning shield nickel that I have my eye on and it has the CAC sticker. I know what I believe I want to pay for the coin. How much of a premium should I expect I expect to pay for the CAC sticker?

Some will say not a dime. But if I really like a CACed coin, I don’t believe 10 percent is out of bounds.

Depends what it is. Somethings the premium is small, others the premium can be huge.

There's not a standard across the board premium

10% would be reasonable in my opinion but if you like the coin, go your research tonight and set your top prices. Put on a smile tomorrow and do your best negotiating to get to or better yet, under that price.

Nada!!!! buy the coin not the sticker or slab. I would throw him a number...a fair offer, and let it roll.
Just remember this....it isn't the only one!
And why should you pay someone for something your eye already knows?

Fair offer 10 % over grey sheet.

I like CAC coins but I will not be extorted..........like Paddy said above, there is plenty of other stuff out there, and no need to vastly overpay for something stickered in green.

Buy the coin, not the label.

Look I do understand seeing something you want....but if it ain't very limited or 1 of a kind...I will not pay more.
In fact have stuck to my guns...walked away and found something even better!
And had I went with my first whim the new find would be a greater disappointment.

Great way for a low end collection. Quality and premium examples cost more

Just like any other coin put your personal value on it and if that gets the deal done great if not then let her go. If a few hours go by and you can't get it out of your head then go back and if it's still there it's meant to be and you can stretch for it!

The most important thing is if you do buy it post pictures here.

Oh sure, nothing else matters as long as if the members on CT get to take a peek at the coin.:hilarious: lol

IMO, the coin itself should determine whether you pay a premium.

The holder, label and CAC sticker are just bits of data to help you. Ultimately, you decide if you're willing to pay a premium for it.

Like other folks have said, the coin needs to speak lovingly to you in its naked glory. However, the clothing (holder and maybe a sticker) will be a big factor in what it costs and what you or your heirs will sell it for. Ya gotta do yer due diligence with price guides or (better) auction prices realized. For a particular TPG and grade, keep separate tabs on coins with and without shiny green badges.

For some of the series I collect, the green badge seems to make little difference in cost/value for a particular year, date, mint mark and grade. For other coins in the same series, the difference can be 30%. There is no universal increased value because CAC likes a coin.

I readily agree, they do !

However, the problem at hand is that just because a slabbed coin has a CAC sticker on it does not in any way indicate that the coin is worthy of a premium, nor does it indicate that it is a quality coin.

I'll grant you that's what "they" want you think - but it simply isn't true ;)

Incorrect. Having a CAC sticker absolutely indicates that it is a quality coin.

Pay a price fair for the coin's quality (which should be solid or premium in most cases), but don't pay for the sticker alone. There are many ugly CAC coins and some with staple scratches (especially early federal coinage) that manage to somehow bean. I would discount those personally.

Because CAC never ever makes mistakes? Are you really that naive? That is not a throw off on CAC, but even if they have a 99.99% accuracy rate for coins that bean (I'm being very generous), that is still thousands of off coins.
