Well, Doug has been vocal in the past about not really caring about rarity simply because of Imperial acclamation titles. So here's one he won't like (BTW that was a joke). Picked up this one today. Attributed incorrectly and listed as a common Minerva type, it's actually rated R2 in RIC. Starting with this issue, Domitian reduced the fineness of the silver to Neronian levels. For those wanting to collect Flavian rarities, owning a copy of RIC is invaluable. A nice coin! http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-153307 RIC 338 Domitian denarius IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM P M TR P IIII Laureate bust right IMP VIIII COS XI CENS POT PP Minerva standing left with spear Rome; 85 AD 3.13g RIC 338 (R2) Ex-Aegean
Very nice Jay. I definitely would have been interested in that had I seen it. As for others comments, collect what you like. I can easily see why you liked this one. Nice portrait, rare reverse legend, and a great face on Minerva.
Beautiful and must be fun to grab something that was wrongly attributed! And you have one of those very long legends. 50 characters!! That's fun, too.
Nice one @Jay GT4 ! Great looking coin! LOL, yeah, Doug, like Mikey doesn’t like everthing... And he certainly doesn’t get some of my collecting niches... but, he still has a few cool things to contribute Etruria Populonia AR 1 As 0.60g 10.0mm after 211 BCE Male Head L - Plain Rev Vecchi 3 68-70 HN Italy 181 EXTREMELY RARE
@Jay GT4 Sorry to bear bad news but I would send this coin to david sear. To me it is an obvious fake made by sand cast mold. I can see even the traces of sand mold on the edges of coin plus the softness on bust etc.
@Jay GT4 if you happy with it up to you but if I had that coin , I would send to david sear. you might have issues reselling/upgrading it later on
