I've been pondering about this... What causes certain people to be attracted to certain coins? Some people would marry a proof V Nickel... Others, like me, would spend a year alone to get a toned coin (not literally, but you get my point)... So, where do you think your passion for a type of coin came from? I think my love for toned coins, especially Morgans, is from an early age. I used to be deep into fish and fish tanks and all that, and I remember always wanting a discus fish. Discus are large round tropical fish that have similar shine to Morgans and their colors are just absolutely wonderful. And that's why I think I love toned Morgan dollars. Here is an example of the "similarities" of the fish and the coin: They're not exactly the same, but the mazing patterns can be found on some Morgans. So, where do you think your passion for a certain coin came from?
My dad was a merchant Marine and traveled all over the world , he would come home and give me all these foreign coins so I started looking them up in the public library. My grandfather gave me old US coins, I was about 10 years old and caught the bug from then on. My favorite coin is any coin. (SMILES)! By the way I like that fish and much as the Morgan coin. Thank for sharing.
Something about a sharp Lincoln bust with some lustrous and/or grainy surfaces, 1909-1920 only. How can you dislike any of these? These ones are obviously my favorites as I show them constantly. Avatar coin, now NGC MS64 BN NGC MS65 BN PCGS MS65 RB *note partially removed VDB* NGC PF64 BN Don't even ask how many 1916's and 1909's I own. I always find those two dates the most attractive.
The silver dollars, its the feel of holding several of them at once while raw, you feel the raw power of the silver in your hand!
I'm that way with any large, heavy, silver coins. I want to hold them in my hand and clink them together and hear the beautiful music of silver coins....but alas, I know better and only clink culls and near culls.
My coin love started with a Columbian Expo coin in a blue flip that my Dad had and kept in his "strong box". When ever my parents would open the box to look for papers, I would ask if I could hold THE coin. I must have been about 8 or 9. I would hold the coin in my hand and daydream about standing on the deck of the ship next to Columbus, sailing the seas and exploring the world. I would try to look into the ship. I would stare into Columbus's eyes, trying to read his mind. Even today, I collect them. Both years, any grade, any time. I have many, but none can or could take the place of that one special one.
My angelic mother kept a clean home. I am talking sparkling perfection. She would nab bits of dust floating in the air..... Now I am not that. But I do obsess over three things. My woodworking, my old car engine... And I love blast white, immaculate coins. I figure those obsessions likely came from growing up in a sparkling environment.
My grandfather got me some framed coin "collections". You know the ones. Coins glued into their slots. Most heavily circulated. Not expensive at all. I became fascinated by some of the coins because I had never seen them before. They weren't in the general coin circulation at the time. Years later, the bug really hit me when I bought a raw Morgan.
