I was told that these are Roman coins. I got on a website that claims to be able to identify Roman coins, but it wasn't working for me if these are Roman coins. Can anybody tell me whether they are, and if they are what coins they are, what era they are from and an approximate of how much they are worth. Appreciate any help.
what you have in that word document are denarius of Commodus (bottom), Gordian III (top), and Caracalla (middle). Whether they are authentic, I wouldnt venture a guess with such photos, they have odd splotches that look like rust?
Best way to tell? What is a good way of telling rust from silver tarnish? Were there people making counterfeit coins back in those days or are the fakes limited to nowdays? Is there an easy way of verifying these coins?
Hello, If authentic, the top one (Gordian III) should be a drachm (greek legend) and the two others denarii. But as Ardatirion and Drusus I would be very suspicious from such pics Cucumbor
So if they have rust, does that mean that they are not pure silver or maybe not silver at all. When silver tarnishes, does it turn at turquoise type color? I thought I remember reading somewhere that at some point the coins were only 40% silver. If that is true, couldn't there be a possibility of rusting? I appreciate you guys identifying them, I have no idea how you did it.
Rust is not an issue on these coins - its the disturbing style and trace casting evidence that leads me to question their authenticity. Regardless, it is possible to get rust on a genuine coin. Likely if it lay in situ with an iron artifact, from which the rust bled onto the coin. Low silver content is generally not an issue for rust, unless the coin was made with an iron alloy. (CERTAINLY not). Of course, patination is a sort of bronze-rust. This and other interesting metal effects are possible on debased antoniniani and denarii.
There is no "rust" on these coins, they are fourees, coins made of copper plated with silver. There is dispute currently going on about what percentages of these are mint products, and what are contempory forgeries. The style on your look fine, so they could just be debased instead.
