Chris, it is Environmental damage , copper is very reactive with chemicals either in nature such as the ground, or in laboratories where chemistry can change the color for normal copper color to silver color ( with zinc) or gold color ( heating it with a flame after reacting with zinc. ) Check the web for "Gold cent chemistry experiment.
