I posted a thread earlier of the total inventory of Morgan’s, and just finished up all the Peace dollars. So here’s the Peace inventory with a picture of one semi key date, 1921... Total 222 Morgan’s 275 Peace 1-1921 47-1922 39-1922D 28-1922S 48-1923 16-1923D 24-1923S 30-1924 3-1924S 1-1925 2-1925S 4-1926 5-1926D 11-1926S 1-1927 2-1927D 2-1927S 1-1934? 2-1934S 1-1934D large 3-1934D small 1-1935 3-1935S
Nice stash !! I'm sure you are grateful for what was handed down. Many coin collectors would love to have something that large quantity to be handed down. i'm sure many here are amazed like me.
Thank you for sharing, it's been fun following along so far. The 21 looks to be, unfortunately, cleaned? But still an appealing coin to my eye with some lovely low-lights from the toning.
I am extremely grateful. I never knew what was in the safety deposit box, no one did. We all just knew there was a “coin collection” in there. When we opened the old canvas bag and looked inside of it, my jaw hit the ground!
Thanks! I can’t imagine that it has been cleaned, it literally has been in the safety deposit box for over 30 years, and rumor has it he bought them all up for the silver, not for any collecting purposes, so I don’t know why he would have tried cleaning it. I’ll take it out of the airtight and take a picture and see what you think.
Im far from an expert so don't put any weight on my guess! I trust your judgment in hand far more than my own! I thought the hairlines in front of the face were a little busy, but I really have no clue. As I said before, a lovely coin along with their awesome story. It's so fortunate that they were passed to someone such as yourself who didn't run them down to the cash4gold store. Edit: Just saw your photos, it does look much less busy straight on. A circulated stunner!
LOL the LAST place I’ll ever run to is the cash4gold store, although I do know some who would! I agree, I really like the colors/tones, and hope that in fact it was never cleaned!
This 1921 Peace looks uncleaned to me. The toning is too even and natural on the reverse and the chatter on the obverse looks like normal 'circulation/sitting in a bag with other big coins' wear and tear for this VF coin.
No doubt! The way I see it, the ride is FAR from over, esp if I decide to to search them all for VAMs
I can only hope that the day I depart this earth, that a new CT member pops up showing off what I left him/her and wanting to know more about the coins. Very cool stash and I hope you have the time/interest to try to VAM them all. Peace dollars are really tricky, but there are some real VAMpires here.
I’ve always liked buying error coins when i see them, and have a nice collection of Morgan’s prior to this, so when I looked in the bag and it was all silver dollars, I’m sure I had a huge smile on my face. I definitely have the interest to search the VAMS, I just need some time to research them and become familiar with some, never have done much VAM searching, but with this many coins, I LOVE a good challenge!
This is just a suggestion, but you might want to pay someone for a professional appraisal. It would surely make more sense than you trying to become an "overnight expert". When it comes to VAM attributions, there is no one who I would trust more than @messydesk (name withheld). Perhaps he would be able to recommend someone to assist you if he can't. Chris
Thanks for the suggestion Chris. I’m definitely not trying to become an overnight expert by any means, just trying to learn what I can as I go. I thought about doing an appraisal like you suggested, but I truly am not too concerned with the value of it, as I plan on just adding it to my current collection, and researching them a couple at a time as time goes on. That being said, do you think having an appraisal would still be a good idea??
Nice coins. There are a few very good dates. That 1921 Peace Dollar is a very good circulated coin, that has not been cleaned. The 1893cc is a great date. The 1895s, while heavily circulated, is a nice coin to own. Did you post the 1934s Peace Dollars—I don’t remember seeing them. Most of the others are common date coins, but nice to have. All in all, a great collection!
To be honest, my last post (#15) came at the same time as your last post (#14). If I had seen yours beforehand, I probably would not have proposed that you get a professional appraisal. Chris
No problem buddy, that’s why I’m here, to get opinions from everybody. I’m pretty familiar with Morgan’s, and have bought and sold them for awhile while building that collection, but the Peace dollars are definitely an entirely different beast in terms of knowledge. Never have really focused on them, it’ll be quite the learning curve
