I need some 1934 Peace Dollar help

Here’s the coin in question. What’s going on with the Mintmark? Bad die press, filled die, damage,etc?
Facts possibly undetainable from pic:
•it is raised, not flat
•no damage to adjacent reeds
•field surrounding the Mintmark has no evidence of any blunt trauma with enough force to “smear” or “blob” the mint mark. If the coin was hit or damaged resulting in misconfiguring the mark, my personal opinion is it would also effect the surrounding field. All opinions welcome, just curious to what everyone thinks.....

So much damage,it’s near bullion. Too many times it was thrown into a poker game.

 

No doubt, looks like it was cleaned with sandpaper at one point. I’ve just never seen a mintmark as a blob, usually it’s either there, flat but legible, or nonexistent.

Wonder if he won the poker game?

 

There is a 34-D DDO.

 

Two, actually! Small D mintmark and Large D. Both come in Doubled die.

 

Both Michael and CBD are correct. If memory serves me correctly, the large D was filled and commands a slight premium over the small D.

 

It looks like it is an "S" mintmark. It's conceivable that this could be heavy circulation damage. It wouldn't be the first time that I saw a mintmark obliterated like this.

If that blob is a D and it's the Doubled Die variety you need to look at the obverse which you didn't post. A 1934-D DDO has clear doubling in the letters D & W of IN GOD WE TRVST. Also minor doubling occurs on Liberty's forehead and there are 2 extra spikes on the far right in her crown.

 

Can’t tell if Chris is correct, and it’s an obliterated S, or if Michael, CBD, and Nut are on the right track with the filled D

 

I didn’t see any obverse doubling, esp not the extra spikes

 

The Large D DOUBLED DIE is doubled on the motto In God We Trust. The Small D has a boldly doubled profile and lips.

The motto is on the reverse but the only DD I know of is on the obverse. Can you enlighten me please?

I don't see any signs of doubling so you either have a 1934-D, large D or the 1934-S. It's too difficult to tell from a photo.

Well, since you love Peace dollars, I’m happy to say I found my first ‘21 high relief in this 500 coin assortment lol

 

That's the common mintmark. Only the 1934-D has both a large and a small mintmark. The larger brings a small premium as that's the year of the Mint changing to the larger mark.

Then you also have a doubled die for both the large and small Mint marks. If you're a variety collector you have 4 different ones to collect.

 

I hate to tell you this but 1921 was the first year of issue and all 1921 Peace Dollars are high relief. All of them were struck in December 1921 but they were not placed into circulation until January 3, 1922.

The high relief design was modified to a shallow relief in 1922. If you find a 1922 high relief then you have a 6 digit coin. Only 35,401 1922 high reliefs were minted but most of them were melted at the Mint.
