Way back when my knees allowed me to run I was running from home to the office and came upon a pile of change in the road next to a stop sign. There was over $3 in nickels, dimes, and quarters. The hard part was running the extra 4 miles to the office with two fistfuls of change. I used to run across the road from a golf course. I picked up over 500 balls during my runs (not all at the same time). I sold most of them at garage sales.
40 years ago I worked with a man that was also a small time coin collector, like myself. We both talked about picking up coins that we would see on the ground. I saw him about 10 years ago and asked if he still picked up coins and he said, "no, that he was walking with a man and went to stop and pick up a cent, and the man said, 'you'll stop and bend over for just one cent'?, and I thought about it, and stopped doing it" he said. Well, I'm 71 now, have L3-L5 in my lower back fused with hardware, my right knee replaced 9 years ago, going to doctor today to schedule to have it replaced, again as it has worked loose, and 3 months after that surgery, I'll have my other knee replaced for the first time. I've only failed to pickup one cent that I saw on the ground, because at that time I was not physically able to bend down. If I see any today, I'll be picking them up. Old habits are hard to break, lol. Oh, I didn't tell all of that for sympathy, I'm doing well, EXTREMELY BLESSED. I just love coin collecting, and have to know what I would be passing up if I didn't get it.
LoL - use line 21 on the new Schedule 1 - you may have to explain 'FOG', though https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040s1.pdf
So, if I unwittingly drop a coin on the ground, when I realize it later on I don't have to mourn the loss and can be confident that one of you will be dutifully picking up my busy East Coast city and by then bacteria-laden-dog-poop-covered-vomit-dipped-rodent-pissed-on-super-bug-laden coin?
For years my daughter and I have had a contest to see who can find the most money on the ground. It all started 30+ years ago when I walked/jogged for exercise but had to keep my eyes on the ground because of instability in both ankles (high school basketball injuries). Any little stone could cause me to re-sprain an ankle or even fall. I eventually had surgeries to correct the instability, but the habit of looking down was so ingrained I do it to this day, especially for the FOG coins/currency. My biggest find: $50 bill. My daughter’s: a wad of six $20 bills. Last year I finally brought a lot of the FOG coins to the bank, after pulling out anything worth saving. It was over $30 in coins. Steve
In a previous life I was a Brakeman on the Railroad. Everyday we would make a stop in a town that housed the Maharishi Guru School of Transcendental Meditation. This was in the 70's. The rich kids that got suckered into the school gave all their money to the Maharishi and made clothes out of bedsheets. They had very little to eat or drink. Everyday we would see them searching for FOG to support themselves. Soda bottles had a 2 cent refund attached. We would put our empties where they could find them so they could get the refund.
You should test the coins & especially bills you get from a cash register...street change is cleaner!
That's why I only use credit and debit cards and handle the cards myself! It's the Big Ewww! Purrell is not just for hospitals!
Long time FOG guy too. Best find isn't a coin though - gold ring with a small diamond - I found it at night because the streetlight shined on the diamond and I saw that and picked it up in the crack of a sidewalk.
Last night I started sorting a box from my 70 year accumulation. It looks like you have a sample of them. They must have been FOG that I discarded, but not far enough.
Too funny I like it ........ I would not report it myself even if it would be a large sum... FOG shouldn't be considered wages or income..... ?????
I’ve seen people just toss pennies/ change leaving a store!!! It’s still money!! It’s fine by me as I always pocket it. LOL
