A second look at this penny...

I posted this a few years ago, admittedly with poorer pics, along with a few other ones found digging through a 5 gal. jug. But after reviewing the error-ref site, this one looks like a ragged fissure for whatever that could mean, no? I have a tough time seeing PMD here, but I’ll defer to the experts.

The shape of the various crevices would seem to me to be not indicative of some type of melting, but thanks for your opinion.

I think I'm seeing the same thing as you do Mark, but the green material kind of indicated corrosion.

It looks like it could be a Ragged Clip to me.

I would say a ragged clip, mostly due to the almost double Blakesley Effect on the opposite side of the coin that would have been from the skip in the upset mill. It would seem to me that the blank for this coin was punched out from the very end of the copper strip to have such a Ragged edge. Very nice coin, and I am amazed at how much circulation wear it has. Nice Photos too.
Can you give us a weight?

I have only a kitchen scale to the nearest gram at the moment, but will be upgrading to a 0.1 gram as i have a few others I’d like to weigh.

That is good. It was just a point of interest for me. It does not change what your coin is.

It would be better to have a scale that weighs to the nearest one-hundredth.

No doubt, but do you have a make/model you’d recommend?...researched several and some of the < $50 0.01 g seemed iffy. Would prefer to spend no more than $100 at the absolute most, regardless.

Not as critical as .01 Get a $15-20 scale that reads to .1 Just needs grams scale for 99% of measurments

    I use a Lyman micro-touch 1500, made for gunpowder.
Good to 1/10 Grain. Measures in Grams also.

Thanks for the advice. Just ordered a 0.1g scale from Old Will Knott Scales. Seemed like a decent site for scale purchases. Only $20 and free shipping!

I agree, looks like a ragged clip to me. Will wait for the weight. (no pun intended :D)

What is the significance of the weight in this case?

    Not much significance here.
