You can buy one already graded for less money then it cost to have one graded.

The primary factor in deciding if a coin is worthy of being graded is the potential for positive value from the grade given. You can expect to spend $30.00-$50.00 having a coin graded...... Given your example, keep in mind there are a lot of RFK halves that have survived in exceptional condition. He was a beloved man in the day so many saved these for later generations. So if you do the math you will find that RFK halves are maybe a $5.00-$10.00 coin. That said, grading your half would be a money losing proposition..... On the other hand, if that half is meaningful to you and you wish to save it for future generations then I would applaud having the half conserved and graded.

You'll come out MUCH further ahead by taking the cost of one or two grading fees, and instead buying the Red Book, the Official ANA Grading Standards, maybe one or two other grading books, and a book or two on particular coin series that you want to collect. If you just start grabbing coins that look nice to you and sending them to NGC or PCGS, you're flushing money down the toilet.

Well I have 34 silver half dollars I just found in 6 rolls of roll searching 64-69. I’m pretty new to this, but highly interested and dedicated to learn. So I’m just soaking up as much info so I don’t make to many mistakes. I did buy this book however.

That's an excellent starting point. And if you found these roll searching, you're already well ahead; buying silver at face value is always a winning proposition.

But very, very few Kennedy halves are in such good condition that they're worth more than the cost of slabbing. The odds of finding one of those from circulation are even tinier.

Bide your time a while longer. If you really want to have some slabbed Kennedy halves, consider buying a couple; in the past month, several MS63 slabbed Kennedys have sold on eBay for under $10 each, and quite a few in MS64, 65, or even 66 for under $20. That's a lot less than you'd pay NGC or PCGS to slab a coin.

Here's a link to the Numismedia price list for MS Kennedys:

    http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/pricesms/kenhlv/prices61.shtml

The listed prices are full retail, which are comparable to Red Book prices; a dealer in general would never buy at those prices, and would be happy to sell at them.

Yes, you are on the right track...from circulation, you want coins with the least wear and fewest flaws and these dimes attest to your efforts. Really like the last one, the 1972...Spark

Where are you getting rolls that produce that many silver half’s?

Well I travel for work a lot in the cellular phone industry. So every town I just random stop at banks when I have time and grab them.

    Ditto.

I understand that many do not mention where they live for fear of being robbed, but out here in southern Louisiana, the prospect of even finding one silver half in circulation is mighty slim. I once asked my bank about halves and I learned that they could be ordered for me but none were kept at the branches.

The same is actually true of silver dimes. I mentioned just the other day that I have found only three over the past year, two Roosies and one Merc.

My wife has a friend whose husband likes to save dimes... he just likes them, that's all, no numismatic interest at all. Last Thursday my wife brought me one of his old 3 pound coffee cans filled with nothing but dimes; she said that I was to look through these for any that I wanted and just replace them at face value for any I found. No cigar, not a single pre-1965 dime in the whole lot.

I think where one lives is important to finding vintage coins in circulation.

WOW!!! I don’t have a lot of luck finding any silver halves where I live due to the fact that they have already been sifted through by other roll searchers. So when I’m home I buy 250$ in dimes. Try the credit unions for the halves. They usually keep in the vault. Keep in mind it usually takes like 20 minutes for them to access the vault. Some protocol they have. If you don’t have an account with them it can be tough too. Like they almost don’t want u to have them. But they have them. So yeah Credit Unions is where I have had the luck. Here are a few pics of some dimes I have found in rolls, and some of the halves that I need to get cases for
