It was good time at the show, stopped by on Friday afternoon and got a few new treasures, nothing I was looking for but coins that I had wanted through the years. My first coins of 2019 The first one when I saw it I had to have it. I have not had a western Roman coin in my collection for some time. MAGNENTIUS- Double Centenionalis 23mm 7.00g JUSTIN and SOPHIA AE Follis, better than most that I have seen and a price that was a steal. And last but not least a coin that I have wanted , the last affordable Roman coin 1423-1448 AD John VIII AR Stavraton 7.14g I have wanted one of those for a long time, it is my 3rd Palaeologus silver and my first full Stavraton. I have admired another one for years so I was happy when I found this at a good price. Anybody else get anything from the shows this weekend, they seemed to be nationwide.
Nice coins you have there! I went to the NYINC Show today - https://www.cointalk.com/threads/rome-89-bc-nicomedia-313-317-ad.330661/
Great Magnentius and also a great follis, plus the latter silver piece is in very good condition as well. Nice haul!
I'm really partial to the Justin & Sophia. It's really nice! Here's mine: Nothing happening in Minnesota Awww, gosh....
Neat new purchases! A Justin and Sophia was the coin that got me into Byzantine culture in general. Here’s my stavraton, ex-Baldwins.
You have good taste in coins. The Magnentius is Amiens mint (AMB) which is my favorite of his mints because of the style. They do tend to be on too small flans. I would love to have one of the fully struck few. Conversely, Nicomedia seemed to have good size flans for these. I won mine in a CNG sale 51 (1999) for what I considered a fair price. The three Palaeologus lots before it were among the nicest half size coins I have ever seen so my coin and the slightly lesser one that followed it looked trashy. Things like that can make a difference in auctions where sense is rarely common.
Very nice coins BenSi. My new Byzantine coins in 2019 are Justin II follis with christogram and big K of Justinian from Carthage. I prevously had this Justin II with cross above M: This is my new Justin II with christogram above M: This Justinian from Cartage is big K - 16.3 g, 30 mm.
Good score @BenSi The one I prefer is the Magnentius Not always Magnentius, AE 1 - Amiens mint, AD 353, D N MAGNEN TIVS P F AVG, Draped bust of Magnentius right SALVS DD NN AVG ET CAES, Large christogram between alpha and omega. AMB at exergue 9.20 gr Ref : Cohen #30, LRBC #19, Bastien # 135 (15 ex), RIC # 34 (C) Q
