Anybody know the mintage quantities of 1934 paper currency? Seems in my early collecting phase of 1934 $50 bills, Im getting a lot of Chicago Notes. ...Also, any of you knowledgable in detecting fakes? To be honest, a fake would be an interesting addition to my collection. I

mintage.. printing... pure technicality lol But to answer the question without my books, i would have to guess billions, if for no other reason then what was happening politicaly back then .. i have tyo guess billions.
paper money versus coins I think Im actually enjoying paper money more than coins. It might even be less risk for me. coin grading is brutal. paper money maybe less so. anybody ever heard of "cleaned" paper currency? paper money doesnt give you the aggravation of arguing with a dealer whether scuff marks are bag marks or circulation marks. plus all the colors and engravings make it more interesting. ....counterfeiting is unfortunate. In a consumer market in a technologically advanced time, the technology is in the hands of many, not just a few. A printing press is not a high-tech gizmo, but in the 1970s and earlier who had a printing press? not many? not high-tech, but still expensive and hard to get.
I think that ironing is the equivalent of cleaning bills lol. I also think that some people are capable of restoring notes that have tears in them, but I don't know how you could miss it if you're given the chance to inspect it. If you're buying online, you may want to be careful (as with buying coins).
Actually I have heard of cleaned notes. I've also heard of trimming the edges, repairing torn notes, ironing notes, .... I've even heard of literally washing the note, then strategically adding dirt back to the note to disguise the fact that it's been washed. There are cons everywhere there is money to be had.
Washing, bleaching, ironing, starching, steaming, paper repairs, bad paper repairs, artificial foxing, trimming, using an eraser to remove a stain or writting..gees it's worse than coins.... The Printing and plate engraving..well thats why we are all here now is'nt it? RickieB
