It appears to be toned - a change of color in the coin due to oxygen and chemicals in the air acting on the metal. This oxidation can result in a variety and level of toning and also depends on the types of the metal – silver, gold, copper, nickel, etc.

 

So its not an error.

I get toned examples like this putting cents into my toaster oven on too hot a temperature.
