I just purchased an older (circa 1950) collection of Roman coins (not my specialty) Can anyone help with this Licinius Follis? Any info appreciated. Thanks in advance
Looks like: Licinius I AE follis of Ticinum. AD 312-313. Obv: IMP LICINIVS PF AVG, laureate head right. Rev: SOLI INVICTO COMITI, Sol standing right, looking left, chlamys over left shoulder and hanging behind, holding globe and raising right hand. Mintmark ST http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/licinius_I/_ticinum_RIC_VI_131c_S_var.jpg Yours has something between the S and T which is not on the wildwinds example though. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in.
The series with the dot is in RIC volume VII Ticinum #22. It is listed as a relatively rare minor variety which explains Wildwinds not having one. While a good resource, they show coins sold and reported by friends of the site and can not be expected to have everything that exists. Rarities caused by a dot or workshop ID can be of interest to specialists but rarely bring much of a premium unless you can find someone looking for that particular series. Licinius is among the most common of Roman emperors but this is a decent looking coin which many of us would be happy to own. I hope you will show other coins from the group. Did you buy them out of interest or as an item for resale?
Thanks you all for the great input! As I am not a collector of Romans (or any ancients) so my intent is to try to attribute as many as possible and put them up for sale. Will definitely post more. Thx again!
