We bought some no date buffalos a few weeks ago, my youngest son soaked them in vinegar. We checked them tonight and found 2 1921-S! I know some people frown on this but he filled a hole in his album.
Thanks Jack, he's 11 years old and he was really excited when he saw that some of the dates were revealing themselves after 2 weeks in the vinegar soak. I bought 158 of these nickels at the local coin shop for 10 cents a piece.
That is cool! He will never forget this and is beginning a hobby that will enrich his life for years to come.
I'm not into cleaning coins but what you and your son did was totally different. You took a 10 cent slug and found a date. SOOOO COOL! I can imagine he was thrilled. Good for him and good for you! clembo
Yes clembo, thank you. I know using vinegar on coins is a no no! They were no dates and at 10 cents a piece it was a good deal. I've got them in soaking in distilled water now and my son will put one in his album tonight.
How about a couple of pictures? I would like to see what they look like. Congrats to your son on the finds!
Nice find! I wonder, I have a whole bunch of old dateless Buffalo's I have gotten over the years. I suppose there is no reason not to get a bottle of Nic-a-Date and see what they are. They couldn't get less valuable than they are now...right?
I think it is pretty cool to be honest! I did it before, it leaves the date looking totally funky, along with the rest of the coin, lol. But still, pretty sweet finds! :thumb: BTW, becareful, I've discovered they will scratch real easy now, and leave some marks too if you aren't careful. Not sure if you knew that or not, lol, but thought I'd share. Sweet finds. :high5: Phoenix
Fantastic. Who's idea was that anyway. Sounds like something your son taught you. Those look great. I'll bet he is happy as can be. One word of caution though. Those coins may smell like a salad so don't try eating them. :headbang:
