1981 Penny with odd surface

    Can anyone tell me what’s going on with this penny? I can’t find anything about this type of thing online which may be due to me not knowing what to call it. The surface of it is... gritty looking.

    Notice how clean the coin looks? What you are seeing is the bare metal of the coin because its natural surfaces have been stripped away. I'd say it is likely it spent some time in acid or an otherwise fairly powerful cleaning agent.
