it's tougher because everyone thought the no sense piece would be recalled so they hoarded those and spent the with cents for a variety. So it has a higher mintage but a much lower survival rate.

I started my collecting with an 1885 Liberty Nickel my aunt gave me. At the same time she gave an 1883 in near mint. These coins came from a jewelry box with other very old things. Perhaps it was there because of what you just said. I don't have a reverse photo right now.

 

The more knowledge you can show the owner(that you are no fool), along with the willingness to learn, may get you far. Depending on the type of person they are they won't be just trying to sell you their junk inventory like many seem to try doing to me when I first show up.

 

This whole "get to know the owner" BS that another poster mentioned is just that. BS. If they're selling Ouija boards and meditation stones/amulets and the worker or owner there is a creepy warlock, she needs to run far from that place and go to a legit coin shop. Seriously.

 

I see what a lot of members post to this woman's threads and it's a bunch of flattery and behind-kissing. Treat her as another collector and look past the fact that she's a female for God's sake. The tone of some of y'all sounds almost creepy yourself. All around the other threads and forums some of you come off as cranky a-holes, but then flip the dynamic on @Shrews1994 threads. It's infurating. Stop the flattery, stop stroking her ego, stop telling her what she wants to hear. Nobody learned anything in this field by others blowing smoking up our rear ends.

Fact of the matter is, NO, she didn't get a good deal, she could've gotten multiple coins of that quality for the same price. Can she learn from it? Yes. Did we all make these types of mistakes? Yes. Just coddling a new collector will do them no good in the long run.

 

Well, I can see you are very concerned for her but, in re-reading my post, it seems to me that it is not a get to know the owner post. It is a let the owner know you are educated and no fool so they are not trying to unload their garbage on you. A good tip for any new collector. I fail to see where the flattery is in my post though? And personally, there are a few gypsies and thieves I would trust long before most members of the congregations I have been a part of.

Yes it was weird. But as I was walking through I seen coin dealers and a bunch of coins. So I had too get something I didn't have Wich was what I posted.

 

It was a trade center. A big store with alot of small shops in it. It wasn't just one shop different people Selling their own things.

 

You're insinuating I'm jealous? Far from it. I'm just tired of the behind kissing you and others seem to do on her posts, instead of being straightforward, honest, and informative which seems rather sleezy. Yes basically. A bunch if small Little shops in a big building. They all do there own thing.

 

Shrew's, those are not typically ideal places to buy coins. However, if you study up, you can potentially find some cherrypicks at such places, as most folks at such places don't usually know what they have and don't price according to value. (They overprice problem coins and common junk) Think of it as trying to find "diamonds in the rough"- a rare coin or variety hidden amongst a bunch of overpriced junk.

 

@Shrews1994 ignore the negative postings here and concentrate on the encouraging ones. Did you do INCREDIBLY well, no, but you did OK. I will not touch on the subject of religion and superstition, although both can be fun. I think this one is a real unplated example


BTW, the rim and the edge are different beasties. You never showed the edge of your coin, but you did show the rim. The edge showing plating is touchy because zinc and steel are both "silver" colored!
