If that gouge appeared towards the rim, through some lettering, no one would think twice about it.

"Speared Bison" "Wounded Eagle"... sounds like bad Native American names.

Give a coin a tacky name, print it in a book or two and now a minor error coin can sell for 1000x more.

If you look up Over-Hyped Coin in a dictionary, youll see a picture of a 1937 3 legged buffalo and the coins I mentioned above.

What is that reverse die number? When did the die get gouged? How many coins are struck from the reverse die? When was that die retired. How many days of striking did that die do? Did the mint reject any struck coins? All questions to be answered to determine the number of coins struck and possibly in existence. Look at the Eisenhower 1972 Type 2 March and August/September strikings.

And if I come across one of these Over-Hyped Coins at face value, I'll happily snatch it up and pass it along to the rubes.

You want over-hyped? 1909-S VDB cent, 484,000 minted, but it's the "Great Rarity" everyone first hears about. The mintage of 1910-P Barber halves was 418,000, and you can buy them for melt. The Betty Ford First Spouse gold proof had a mintage of 1,972, and you can buy a slabbed PF70 for less than a low MS S VDB.

Im not disagreeing with you. I dont believe the 09S VDB is rare at all. But it has a story and the story sells. Heck even the 22 No D has a story.

My problem is how many coins with die gouges and grease filled dies can literally be turned back and spent? Yet those that have a tacky name can be worth stupid amounts of money.

but you can't go wrong buying 60 dimes at melt value from someone who doesn't know what they have.
