What grade would people in the know recommend to buy in modern coins. I have some 70s but as you all know there is a big price gap in the cost for something that is hard to see. Thanks.
69s unless you're rich and can replace the 70s when they get spots or ugly toning. I've seen 69s that should have been 70. I've seen 70s that should have been 69. jmo
70's, first strikes and special labels are a fad IMHO. Some day, at some point in time, many people will realize, when it comes time to sell, that they made a less than desirable investment of their money. L&C Coins sells bulk lots of MS69 coins in PCGS slabs for under $6.00 each. Even submitted in bulk, someone paid for the slabs hoping for a 70. Terrible waste of money. However, if it's a registry set you intend on completing for showmanship, then by all means have fun. In that case someone may pay decent money for a complete set some day. But these are just my thoughts and I'm sure others may and will disagree.
If I show you a MS69 Proof coin and an MS70 Proof Coin but the grades are covered up, could you tell which is which? Most likely not!
To hand down to my daughter and grandsons mostly to do with whatever they want. Hope maybe one of them would like to carry on with collection and if not would like for them to get whatever the value would be without too many problems.
I have been accumulating mint and proof sets for years. I think they will always be worth the investment. If we ever go electronic pay then they will absolutely get scarce and scarce quick. There's no fad, they have been around for years and years. The labels main thing is they play into presentation value, just like someone making a custom holder ect. The custom slabs and labels will just continue to increase as time goes as as different people like different presentations. Yes a lot of the 70s drop from their initial release price when the product is hyped up and everyone wants it, but they always hold above the 69 price. There's almost certainly always going to be people that want the best and are willing to pay at least a little more for it. Would I consider them an investment no I wouldn't, if I wanted to pass an investment down to the kids or grand-kids I'd be buying them Amazon/Google/Apple stock not modern US mint products Mint and proof sets from the US mint are one of the worst investments that basically always drop in price. At least wait for the price drop on the aftermarket. Absolutely no chance we are cashless in under a decade. There isn't anyone alive right now who will see a cashless USA. The USD is a world reserve currency and used in countries around the world it isn't going anywhere. It would have basically 0 impact on the drug trade.
